September 2010
I’ve never asked an athlete, actor or rock star for an autograph. But no one has asked me for my John Hancock either, so I guess we’re all even. I have no problems with autographs or memorabilia collections… it’s just not my thing. Although I absolutely love sports, movies and music, I’ve never had the desire to get a signature. I love what great artists and performers may produce, but I’ve never thought that this made them important, good, or significant persons.
Jesus taught that there is a different path to eternal significance. An NBA championship, Academy Award or the cover of People magazine will not get you there. In God’s Kingdom the way to the top is to bless and serve others -- The greatest among you will be your servant. (Matt 23:11) Godly servants are humble… they don’t hunger for the limelight… they don’t draw attention to themselves.
A great servant from Crossroads entered God’s presence recently. For more than 80 years Mr. Rollo West was a blessing to all he encountered. He was supremely generous with his kind words, encouragements and joy. He was a true servant and this is why he was a great man. This is why he now hears the words, Well done, my good and faithful servant… come and share your master’s happiness. (Matt 25:21).
Most of us want our lives to be significant. We want our lives to matter. If so, we should follow the example of Rollo West and Jesus Christ. We can start by serving others. You are always to welcome to join us as we follow Jesus together. This month, we are beginning a new series on the book of 1 Timothy.
